The colonel (r) Gheorghe SUMAN is a renowned personality both in the military and civil life of Romania and overseas. His activity and work have a substantial grounding in the deep sense of the call of duty. The mountain troops in the command structures of the Romanian Defense Ministry were always represented by professionals. These experts were responsibly watched over the mountain infantry. Amongst them has to be mentioned the name of the colonel Gheorghe Suman. By his impeccable actions and endeavors in the service of the army, civil society and the country, he has proven himself as an outstanding senior officer entirely devoted to his mission. Having the position of staff chief at the Mountain Instruction Center he trained with tact and rigor many young military generations as elite of the mountain infantry. This important detail confirms the value and valor of the colonel Suman who can be depicted by his facts as a brave man. Besides the colonel was the initiator of the "Carpathian Patrol", a difficult contest for the mountain infantry which required covering a mountain line. His remarkable armed activities were multiplied by a continuous research in the field of the modern history of the Romanian Army as well the evolution of the mountain infantry during almost 100 years of military tradition. The colonel Suman wrote many books published by prestigious editors. The main idea of his opuses draws the reader's attention to the concept of professionalism, bravery and valor of the mountain troops. The colonel Suman's books are so many windows for the future generations to look at the ancestors' chronicles: The epic of the Mountain troops, The history of the Mountain troops in the Romanian Army, The 21st Mountain Battalion on the way of the military honor and glory, The History of the 2nd Mountain Brigade, The elite of the high mountains , etc. The Trophy "General Leonard Mociulschi" awarded today to the colonel (R) Gheorghe Suman represents a high recognition based exclusively on the criteria of valor and worth which led the legendary general Mociulschi in his life; explicitly, the virtue to achieve good things and the sustained activity in the service of the army as well the civil society. Reporter (TVR): What does the trophy signify for you, as former officer? Col. (R) Gh. Suman: It signifies 35 years of hard work in the field of literature and military history, mainly regarding the mountain troops. I wrote about their training across the time, too. Reporter (TVR): Did you meet the general in person, sir? Col. (R) Gh. Suman: In two situations personally: first one was in 1965, right after he was released from the prison and he came to the main entrance of the 21st Mountain Infantry Battalion in the town of Predeal. Being on duty that time, I went to welcome him when I get informed that a personality was waiting for me. The second time was a sad moment: at the Human Crematorium in Bucharest, in 1979, when he was incinerated. |
